Curious if Higher Education is for You? Unveiling 5 Key Learnings from Two Master's Degrees
Updated: Jun 5, 2023
Embarking on my final course of my MS in Computer Information Systems and Business Analytics, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I have undertaken. It all began when, amidst the demands of a full-time job and the challenges of returning from maternity leave, I decided to pursue higher education. I knew that my current career path was not aligned to my long term goals and I wanted to advance my options. Initially considering an MBA, I discovered an opportunity to explore the technical realm through technical electives, which ignited a curiosity and a belief that it was never too late to learn something new. As I progressed through various technical classes, I found myself embracing the idea of pursuing a second MS degree. In this blog post, I aim to share my 5 key takeaways from this Master's degree experience, offering insights for those considering higher education while acknowledging that it may not be the best option for everyone.
1. An Abundance of Tools and Opportunities:
In today's world, there exists a vast array of tools and resources to advance one's career. Higher education is just one of these options. When contemplating further education, it is essential to find a program that aligns with your schedule, budget, and career goals. Understanding your objectives and whether you seek a network, skill development, or the degree itself will help you identify the program best suited to your needs.
2. Tailored Learning and Focused Exploration:
Having the opportunity to pursue a Master's degree allowed me to focus on areas that genuinely interested me. Unlike my undergraduate experience, I could delve into specific subjects and connect with classmates who shared similar passions. While not everyone may find higher education as fulfilling, for those who do, it provides an environment where academic pursuits align with personal interests, fostering a more engaging learning experience.
3. Credentials for Career Transitions:
For individuals seeking career transitions, certain credentials can provide an advantage by accrediting their experiences at a particular level. While this may not be necessary for everyone, a degree can facilitate a smoother transition by offering a recognized accreditation of one's expertise. It bolsters confidence and credibility, making it easier to embark on new professional paths.
4. Building Confidence in Learning:
Perhaps the most significant transformation I experienced during my higher education journey was the growth of my confidence in learning, particularly in tech-related areas. The program exposed me to a broad range of subjects I may not have discovered on my own. Through diverse learning options, teaching styles, and resources, I discovered my preferred learning style, and this newfound confidence empowered me to overcome challenges.
5. Overcoming Challenges and Balancing Life:
Undoubtedly, pursuing higher education while juggling various responsibilities presents its fair share of challenges. From navigating coding environments to overcoming obstacles when feeling stuck, the journey tested my determination. Balancing the demands of work, family, and studies was no small feat. However, each challenge surmounted instilled in me a greater sense of confidence, proving that I possess the resilience and capability to face future obstacles head-on.
Final Thoughts:
As I approach the culmination of my higher education journey, I can confidently assert that the experience has been immensely rewarding. While recognizing that not everyone needs a formal academic setting to build professional expertise and gain similar confidence, I encourage those who feel compelled to pursue higher education to go for it. There is no better time than now to embark on such a transformative journey. It is not necessary to have your final destination all figured out. Embrace the process, seize the opportunity to grow, and explore the possibilities. Wishing you all the best on your own unique path, and I invite you to connect with me if you would like to learn more about my higher education experience or share your own story. (:
